I've done very similar for myself. I wouldn't recommend MD5 as GPU hash cracking can reach the billions of guesses per second. I personally use sha512 through numerous rounds of hashing. This forces a time based trade off increasing the cost to crack an individual record. I've yet to see a successful attack against this type of implementation. In the least, I can help you with your required task. As far as a penetration test, I have commercial tools (from previous projects) that I can use to conduct a lite penetration test which can find, sometimes extremely dangerous, low hanging fruit.
