Create API for Woocommerce (Wordpress) for inserting products in DB

I have installed woocommerce shop to my customer. Customer has specific need that they would like to insert products from external system mainly via automated procedure that takes images from all products. So we would need some API that would be able to receive product basic info and also the image so it would automatically generate new product for that and then return url / id of added product. You can do this either by creating directly inserts to database or using some additional API that does post data to add product form. Let me know what experience you have and what method you prefer. I guess for experienced person this won't be a big task.
