Mediawiki and virtual host directory on apache

Server has beeen correctly configured to allow Apache virtual hosts point different subdomains to different directories. [login to view URL] -> root/a (where a contains a single html file) [login to view URL] -> root/b (where b contains a single html file) However if I put a mediawiki installation into one of these directories, the virtual hosting no longer works. [login to view URL] -> root/a (where a contains a single html file) [login to view URL] -> root/b (where b contains a mediawiki installation) Expertise required to resolve this and explain why this is occurring.
