Product Overview/Vision: The intent of this project is to create design concepts that can be translated into assemblies of materials that, when completed present shapes, images and arrangements that communicate holiday and special event themes.
The desired end product will consist of combinations of multi-colored cards of several dimensions including 2 7/8" x 1 3/4", (other sizes to be provided), that are assembled into shapes and arrangements that represent specific themes. The cards, may be folded, rolled, shaped, bent and otherwise used together in combinations. For example, a simple concept might be a holiday Christmas tree that uses the cards in shapes to depict the pointed top, the levels of branches, and the stump. The designs and shapes can include 1, 2 or 3 dimensions also. For example, sets of cards could be bent to create a circle and then stacked in the shape of a barrel.
The envisioned designs can also use pre-printed and shaped components that can be implemented on die-cut heavy paper/cardboard sheets. For example, a Turkey design could include a pre-printed picture and punch out shape of a turkey head that would be integrated into the design using the cards.
Finally, the best designs should also be relatively easy and fast to assemble, use the least amount of materials (fewer cards is better that more cards) as well as be capable of clear and graphically illustrated instructions.
Creative development considerations: The first phase is the creative development of concepts that can be evaluated and prioritized, allowing the development of more detailed designs, colors, shapes, and assemblies and final materials specification.
Phase 1: This phase focuses on the initial concept development, and should be focused on brainstorming and creative iteration, and can use sketches, drawings, etc. This phase should include a written list of specifications and instructions including the envisioned steps to assemble the designs.
Phase 2: This phase builds on Phase 1, and focuses on iterating on the best ideas including designing the underlying forms, structures and other assembly processes, tools and materials required to make the display and produce a firm and fixed end product that will not fall apart.
Phase 3: This is the prototyping stage that builds on the top concepts from Phase 2. In this phase, we will build test and fine-tune the designs, improve the internal structures and simplify the instructions.
