I have worked with both rotational and linear actuators. I have designed CNC stepper ball with ball screw mechanism. The stepper motor like NEMA 17 and 23 required motor driver and I have successfully used Arduino and ESP to take care of the control part. I have experience with the complete hardware integration and coding. With suitable time delays I am able to infuse speed control and micro stepping. We can use polling method for gathering the sensor feed continuously and drive an interrupt when the sensor senses a metal. But I would need more insight on the type of sensor being used for the project.
