This project is to create a free Open Source Screen Reading program for the Symbian Operating system which uses free multilingual text to speech tointerpret what is on the screen for blind, visually impaired, and illiterate people. ## Deliverables This project is to create a free open source Screen Reading program (Screen reader), for the Symbian Operating system using free open source packages. What is a screen reader? A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen (or, more accurately, sent to standard output, whether a video monitor is present or not). This interpretation is then re-presented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a Braille output device. Screen readers are a form of assistive technology (AT) potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, illiterate or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT, such as screen magnifiers. For this project I require: *Convert or port ESpeak from [login to view URL] to the Symbian Operating system so it can be installed and run on phones such as Nokia 6600 through Nokia n86 and n96 phones. In other words Symbian 7 through Symbian 9. *Port brltty to Symbian *NVSA (nonvisual Symbian Access) must have a modifier key that is configurable from the screen reader's settings window when pressed together with another key it performs special screen reading functions such as read character, read entire window or change how much punctuation is read. *voice pitch, spelling rate, speaking rate, inflection, punctuation, speaking of function keys such as select, selecting braille display through brltty a pronunciation dictionary and object viewer/configuration window must be present in the settings window. If I am using a file browser I may want to set some icons objects or graphics to speak only once or to be silent or change the object's class by choosing it in the list hitting key1 for options and choosing a new class from themenu. *modifier+right arrow could speak soft-keys. *when phone is restarted after screen reader installation, screen reader must automatically start and read the main screen or current window followed by reading the softKeys and their current labels. *All of ESpeak's languages variants and voices must be able to be chosen from settings window. Settings are automatically saved when window is closed. *When pressing numbers or typin letters tere should be three settings, (say nothing) nothing is spoken when keys are pressed. (speak characters) if I press 2 two times for B NVSA should say a, b, then when B is inserted into text area the letter should be spoken again upon insertion. (speak words) nothing is spoken while typing but when space is pressed the last word entered is read aloud. *Screen Reader must work with and read Loadstone from [login to view URL] . *screen reader must work with and read the phones menus and settings windows and options the status of checkable items, must notify the user if he is in a window, dialog box, whether the item he is on is a button, or is checked or unchecked, list views and how many items are in the list view, example, "switch off!" one of thirteen. *screen reader must have a speak numbers as whole numbeers, and speak numbers as digits settings. When whole number is set, NVSA will when it encounters a number like 100, will say--one hundred, when set to single digits, it'll say one zero zero. *screen reader must work with email, text messaging, media player and web browser. It must display websites using virtual buffers to render the website with links in a listlike view the usermust be able to jump by headings frames form fields buttons edit fields and checkboxes by pressing modifier+key command to jump by that element. *finally you agree when completed to give me the software plus the source code. This project will be released as free open source software so that blind people will no longer have to pay $300 everytime they want to buy and access a talking mobile Symbian phone. ## Platform Symbian 7 through all flavors of Symbian up to the present Symbian version. I must be able to use the software on a nokia 6600 as well as a Nokia n86 n82 and n96 n73 n75 etcetera. For a list of compatible phones [login to view URL] mobilespeak symbian.
