Maintaining High Resolution at larger sizes

I have a program that was coded for me that I would like some additional help with. Here is how my program works. The user loads in a digital picture and then the program allows the user to print an enlarged copy of that picture up to 20 feet wide on a standard desktop printer. The user decides the size they want the picture to be and then the program divides the picture up into a grid according to the size the user chooses and then prints out each grid piece on a separate piece of paper but at a larger scale. The user then takes each piece that is printed out and pastes them back together to create a large poster size or mural size picture. The program works fine as it is but with one problem; when the user enlarges the picture larger then the regular size, the resolution/dpi decreases so when the larger pieces are printed out, it is not as sharp and crisp as the original picture. What I am looking for is someone who can change it so the larger pictures will have the same DPI and resolution as the original picture so the picture will be as clear and crisp as the original picture, no matter what size the user makes it. So for example, as the program is now, if the original pictures resolution was 500 dpi and the user enlarged it to twice its original size, the new picture would only have a dpi of about 250, not 500 like the original. I need it fixed so each piece of the grid that is printed will maintain the original resolution. So if the final picture measures 5 feet x 3 feet, it will still be as crisp and sharp as the original 8x10 photo. If you have any questions, please let me know.
