small C/C++ program (help)

This is a small program and I am interested in the logic and algorithm rather than the code itself which is trivial. given say 4 characters A B C D generate a sequence of these characters for each call, say by a random number. that's it. But the algo should be extensible to larger set of given characters. say all the alphabets of english. That is where I am stuck because that would be really tough to print all such a sequence. If you done this problem before then bid because this problem is tough.
