Smart Voting

Background The Student Representative Council (SRC) elections take place every year during the third term of the year. These elections are important for students as this body “is the highest authoritative body of students at a university, and negotiations are entered into by the SRC on behalf of the university students. Any agreement or consultation between the University Council and the SRC is binding on all registered students” according to the university rules and regulations. About the project Problem with manual voting Issues with manual voting include the time-consuming process it takes to vote, which is not convenient for all students to participate in the elections and leads to fewer numbers of students voting for the SRC. In addition, with manual voting, not all the ballot papers can be counted in as some will be spoilt, resulting in less than 100% of the votes being part of the counted ones. Lastly, the manual counting of ballot paper takes time and it is not efficient. Purpose of the project The purpose of the project is to have online voting for the SRC elections by creating a SIMPLE and easy-to-use web-based and mobile application that can be used to easily facilitate the voting process at a university. This will enable students who do not have time to go to the voting station to have real-time access to vote wherever they are, and more students will be able to participate in the elections. The objectives of the application are: 1. Provide real-time access for voting to university students wherever they are 2. Automatically count the number of votes per candidate 3. Check for validity of students (both the voters and the candidates) 4. Have votes cast correctly Both the Web and mobile should use the same database(preferably online... for example, Firebase's FireStore)
