Completed 50,000 word manuscript of a referenced self help book on work ace bullying. Needs final editing, aNd feedback on any parts of the structure that don't seem to flow well or paragraphs out of place. Has already been appraised twice so I don't expect major changes, just a final edit to tidy sentences and paragraphs and make more succinct if needed. Most important is my concern about use of references. I wish to Avoid having to seek author permission. Most references are brief facts although a few references are quoted a few times. If I don't cite the source but include facts, eg about the prevalence of bullying, will i lack credibility.? I want the path of least resistance, but where I am covered against plagiarism. Ten pages are currently being reviewed by a lawyer so will need separate minor editing in about 2-3 weeks time. Also opinion sought on whether to keep a strong Australian emphasis, or will this limit readership?

Hi, my name is Anne and I am from Australia. I'm new to Freelancer but I have been a professional writer and editor for the last 6 years. I recently published a book via Amazon, so I understand the concerns you are facing with editing, structure and plagiarism. Regarding your book, I think if you're including facts presented in your own words that are of common sense, you won't lose credibility. However, if you're using a fact that's been discovered and coined by a particular person, then I think citing is definitely a must. I can help you work through this. In regard to keeping a strong Australian emphasis / will this limit readership is hard for me to say at this point in time, as I haven't read your book. However, finding your niche is not always a negative even if it means that 100% of your readers are Australian based. Sometimes it's good to narrow it in and focus on one niche rather than throwing your book into a bigger market where it could get lost. Please contact me for more information. Kind regards, Anne

As an independent publisher, I have experience doing final editing on several books. I graduated with a BA specialized in TESL, which involved much helping write academic books and took a course on helping students write papers. My studies covered how to proof edit for accidental plagiarism. I worked with several Korean roommates; I taught them to check their papers for proper citation and paraphrasing verses quoting. I have also been working as a consultant for a foundation that is trying to recover ownership of books after several years of not enforcing the foundation's ownership. This has given me experience with the laws of the United States in copyright, as well as an understanding of issues brought up by the internet and the vast flow of information it causes. The last book I edited is "Heather's Tears: The Story of An American Orphan." This book also brought up some legal issues around including identifiable characteristics of people in any book with true events. I did final editing of this book in 2 days. I would love to look over your book, and edit for flow and grammar, as well as check out your use of references. I do enjoy when self-help books cite sources, because it gives me, as the reader, additional tools to deal with my issues. I would have a goal of being done by Friday afternoon, May 2nd, Denver, CO, USA time.

I've been writing self-help for ten years. This past year Don McNair, author of “Editor-Proof Your Writing: 21 Steps to the Clear Prose Publishers and Agents Crave', has trained me in the art of editing. During this year I have written two 65,000 word fast-paced thrillers, which we edited together. Your project sounds interesting, and I believe I could add useful feedback from my experience in both writing self-help and the thousand plus self-help books I have read. Personally, I write my books in US English to reach a larger market. In Word it's quite easy to edit the book in either Australian English or US. The references you've used could be made general. i.e. 1209 instances of work place bullying - could be changed to 'more than 1200..... ' I look forward to hearing from you, Kind regards, Chris

Greetings Ms. Christina. Sorry to just dive right into it, but I know this job requires the very characteristics I possess. Being a fifth year engineering major I have regularly composed, edited, proofread and submitted technical and college level literary papers of 3000 up to >100000 words. I have honed the habit of working in excess of 6-8 hours to a fault, taking only intermittent and interspersed walking/coffee breaks to refresh mind and body. I function well on a deadline and can work under pressure without losing focus and interest in the task at hand. I am detail oriented and a perfectionist of sorts giving me an invaluable advantage in jobs like editing and proofreading. Hire me. I promise you you won't regret it.

Hi, I am more than happy to help you with this project and feel that I am ideally qualified to do so. I will personally edit and feedback not only from a language / grammatical point of view but also from the perspective of ensuring that your message is clearly conveyed. The use of references is indeed tricky and I feel your lawyer is better placed to advise on these matters from a legal point of view. From a sales point of view (as you mentioned credibility) I think that referencing facts will only add to your credibility if you are using established sources to reinforce your own ideas. Depending on the subject matter 'readers' usually base credibility (from a sales point of view at least) there are a number of factors such as (but not exclusively): 1) whether they have heard of you 2) whether you have been recommended to them 3) Book cover design / blurb, author bio 3) perhaps a quick scan of pages. Without seeing the manuscript the 'strong Australian emphasis' is difficult to comment upon. It also depends on your goals for the book. Are you self-publishing or being published? I should be able to gauge once I have seen the manuscript. I am happy to enter into discussion about completing further work (should you wish / require it) around marketing. For example, although money can be made from self-help books as with almost all non-fiction books the REAL money is to be made by other means - speaking engagements, training etc. Good luck with your project. John.
