This is actually a rather awesome project, as I was just creating a very similar script for my server. The idea behind the script I was working on is quite simple, users register on a web form and a PHP script creates the account on the Linux (Ubuntu, which is based on Debian) computer. From what I gather, this is very close to what you are looking for, and I can implement my code on your servers for a modest fee of $35.
