Needs help configuring secondary MX server to store emails if primary server is down. Where looking at postfix, know it can be done, but are unable to do so myself. However are open to suggestions, as long as open source and *nix based. It needs to be for an unlimited domains (ie any domain, no configuration should be needed to add additional domains, no MX backup records should be checked on the domain dns part) All mail should be delivered to one single server. Should not be open relay (obviously) Should cache valid (for at least 4 hours) and non valid recipients (for 5 minutes). In case primary server are down, reject emails with unknown recipient with temporary failure so they don't bounce or get stored. Emails with known good recipient should be accepted and stored until primary server are up. Should not be a backscatter server, ie should not accept emails to addresses that does not exist. Will provide a virtual server, when server for fills the above requirements payment will be released.

To whom it may concern, I have 15+ years of experience in *nix systems. I'm mostly building my own server solutions with LFS. I have been building, administering and hardening servers including Postfix servers for the past 8 years. There are still some open questions in regards to your description. Otherwise, I'm at your disposal for further questions. Regards, Daniel

Hi, I can help you with this project. Linux sysadmin here with 10+ years experience. Your project is doable, however there are some caveats: - You cannot be a secondary MX for any domain without any configuration, unless you want your server to become a secondary MX for the entire internet! You _need_ configuration to tell your MX for which domains it will accept mail. - Your server must know which users are valid for any domain it relays mail for, so it must obtain a up-to-date list of users for every domain. It can do so in real-time (e.g. connecting to a LDAP or MySQL server) or in batch mode (primary MX generates a table of users and rsyncs it to secondary MX)

I have been working with postfix for more than seven years, and I consider myself to be one of the top postfix administrators in freelancer. Some of your requirements cant be done, because, if you dont tell postfix which domains to accept mail for, how would it know which emails to accept and which ones to reject? It has to become a honeypot if it cant know which domains to accept mail for.

Hello, As someone whose focus are mail servers, I'm quite interested on working on this with you. A backup MX is initially quite simple, but let me quite two of your sentences that make it complicated: 1) It needs to be for an unlimited domains (ie any domain, no configuration should be needed to add additional domains, no MX backup records should be checked on the domain dns part) 2) Should cache valid (for at least 4 hours) and non valid recipients (for 5 minutes). How will it tell if a mail address is valid or not if the main server is down and you don't want to set up specially any mailbox (list) on the backup? That's the only question for now. Best Regards, Istvan
