Normally excel (or any program for that matter) cannot do partial searches unless there is a certain logic for what is considered a partial match (the letter "e" can be a found as partial match between almost all the entries, which is obviously a not very useful outcome) If you can send me the file I'd be happy to review the data and get back to you with a practical proposal

Hello, I think I've bid on this project before and I've explained my proposed approach (introducing a variable which would determine the accuracy of the search - from 0=inaccurate to 100=exact match) so that you can play around and see which setting works best for you. Otherwise you would have a logic which works only as the programmer designed it, you have no further input... If you would like, and you are not in a hurry, please send me the sample file and I will create a demo version that you can then try out for other data as well. I will preface my proposal by saying that I was just able to successfully implement the code you requested after reading the description. It's available to be sent immediately upon selection of my bid. Please don't let my absence of feedback keep you from considering me for this project; I'm an experienced programmer with a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering and new to Freelancer. I regularly write code to handle large data sets for my job, so this project was relatively straightforward to complete. The code works in the following way. It will go through the list of Names With Typos and compare each name against those in the Correct Names list. It first checks for exact matches, just in case the name is already correct as entered. If no exact match is found, it compares the characters of each name and assigns a percent match value based on how many characters are shared. If multiple matches are found using this approach, it compares the overall length of the name to choose the best match. The code is thoroughly commented and should be easy to follow even if you have very little programming experience. I will be happy to answer any questions. If you don't end up awarding me this project, I would strongly advise against spending more than $10 for a solution. This is a very straightforward problem and it should take any experienced programmer an hour or less to solve
