The purpose is to build a data logging device, where data is stored locally and communicated via WiFi when possible, to the company server.? ? ? ? ? ? ? *Variables to log* * number of times the starter was used * time duration, in seconds, of each starter usage * battery voltage: * once every hour * every time it drops below 13 V if the engine is running, sample every 5 minutes * every time it drops below 12 V if the engine is not running, sample every 0.5 V in voltage drop * before, during and after each starter usage * two thermocouples * every 5-15 minutes or when a 5 ºF degree in change has occurred in either thermocouples * before, during and after each starter usage * RPM of the motor * during each starter usage * every time it rises above 3000 * hourmeter, consecutive hours running * optional data for some data loggers: * some of the devices will not have the following hardware and the uC will need to? be able to determine if it should? skip these components if unavailable. the same code is to be used and all units.? * * 3D accelerometer , log whenever an impact greater than some Gs has occurred * GPS location and speed. The location every 20-50 feet change or if it did not move for more than 2 minutes ? ? ? ? ? ? ? *Inputs:* * RPM, digital * ignition key, digital * starter engine, digital * thermocouples, analogue (two) * voltage, analogue ? ***Data storage and communication***? ? ? ? ? ? ? The log data is stored in a flash chip and the communication with it is performed using the SPI bus. The communication via WiFi is performed using the Roving Networks RN-131 module. This module talks with the micro-processor (MC) using the serial port. The microprocessor attempts to connect to a wireless network every 5-15 minutes. If successful it transmits one log line at a time, transmitting the next only if it was successfully received by the server.? ? ? ? ? ? ? The transmission of the log lines is performed using the POST method of http servers. The reply is a string with “ACK??? (acknowledge) in case of failure, “NACK?? (not acknowledge) if the line was properly received. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? The WiFi module has available a real-time-clock, from which the current date and time are obtained.? ? ? ? ? ? ? The log is transmitted as a series of lines, each containing the values of all variables separated by commas. The first value is the ID? number of the data logger, the second value is the firmware version, then followed by the date, time and the values of each variable in the order defined at the beginning of the document.? ? ? ? ? ? ? A table is required for converting the thermocouples output voltage to temperature. ***Software to build***? ? ? ? ? ? ? The following software modules compose the data logger:? 1. WiFi module interface, duration 2 days. The RovingNetworks Wifly (RN-131) module is used, which communicates with the micro-processor through the serial port ? 1. GPS module interface, duration 2 days. The RoundSolutions ORG-1315 module is used. It communicates through the serial port and exports data in the NMEA-0183 ? protocol. It is possible to use other GPS modules as long as they use the same protocol, although the communications can be through I2C, SPI or serial port? 1. Flash memory interface, duration 2 days ? 1. Log interface, duration 3 days ? 1. Input reading (analogue and digital), 1 day ? 1. Integration of the code, 3 days ? Additionally, two weeks are expected for debugging. ? ***Hardware*** * accelerometer: ADXL345 ? * GPS:? RoundSolutions ORG-1315 * WiFi: RovingNetworks Wifly (RN-131) * Flash memory: Numonyx MP25P16 ? ***Firmware Update***? ? ? ? ? ? ? The firmware of the micro-processor can be updated through the wireless wifi connection. The procedure is as follows:? 1. check with the central server if there is a new version of the firmware for the micro-processor ? 1. if it exists, download it to the flash memory chip ? 1. restart the micro-processor ? 1. the bootloader checks the flash memory chip for the existence of a new firmware ? 1. if it is present, it is loaded. Otherwise it proceeds with the existing firmware ? A bootloader is developed, which checks for the existence of code in a specific memory segment of the flash memory chip.
