I have graduated from the...I am a Mining Engineer with a PhD in Materials Science and Technology, and research and professional interests in fossil fuels, nuclear waste, recycling techniques and technologies, chemical and radiological pollutants, industrial production studies, and environmental and occupational safety. I have graduated from the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering in 2003, where I did a thesis related to coal blending for solid fuel optimization. My master's thesis at Metsovio (Materials Science and Technology) was about the combustion of coal and plastic waste. My PhD thesis at the University of Manchester, in the Nuclear Graphite Research Group, was on the thermal and radiological properties of graphite nuclear waste. Upon my return to Greece I worked in the recycling sector. In the past I have also dealt with environmental impact studies as well. During my professional career, in the academic field, in the freelance profession and also as a corporate executive, I have gained a lot of experience in various environmental sectors. My main professional and research interests focus on areas such as recycling, nuclear waste, solid fuels and the environment. While working in the UK, as part of my PhD, I received training in nuclear waste radioactivity measurements, and the necessary number of accreditations to work in a classified radiological laboratory. Then, I was employed in a recycling company in Mytilini as a scientific staff and as a supervising engineer of recycling processes for old metals, electrical appliances, etc. At the same time, I held a corresponding position as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Environment of the University of the Aegean. I dealt with air and soil pollution measurements of industrial facilities (suspended particles – heavy metals). I publish scientific papers from this project even today. Then, I worked for 5 consecutive years at the Hellenic Atomic Energy Commission, where I am still today. Specifically, I work in the Environmental Radioactivity Control Department. where I carry out on-site radioactivity inspections and work in the provision of laboratory analysis services with γ-spectroscopy, for industry. I carry out sampling of aerosols, water, soil and rock samples throughout Greece, to assess the natural radioactivity of the Greek area. I issue reports on cases of orphan source finds. I supervise radioactive decontamination work in cases where orphan sources are found. Since January 2015 – until now I have been conducting scrap metal radioactivity audits with over 400 on-site inspection reports for imports and exports of scrap metal in the metallurgical industries. I have issued over 31 warnings in respective cases of orphan source finds. My published research work consists of a total of 16 published or accepted papers and 8 presentations at international scientific conferences. I have also authored a number of industry reports and consultancies with industry clients. less
