1. Does the concept of ‘late development’ demonstrate the origins of differing national institutions and business systems, and explain contemporary trends in the performance of leading economies?
2. Do you accept the argument that the policies in human resource management and training adapted by Germany and Japan have contributed to their national competitiveness of these nations? Compare and contrast with other nations.
3. Critically examine to what extent has the model of large-scale ‘managerial enterprise’ discussed by Chandler been followed in all the world’s leading economies studied in this course?
4. How have arguments about the long-term advantages of the Anglo-American finance and banking system, compared to its rivals, been affected by crisis and recession since 2008?
5. Evaluate Porter’s concept of the ‘diamond’ as a management tool for analyzing the competitive advantage of nations, assessing its theoretical coherence and empirical support.
Any one of the above question can be answered if you have in depth knowledge of the question.
Important criteria for assessment :
a) Overall: Answering the question(s); knowledge and understanding of theory and literature; knowledge and reference to appropriate cases and evidence; and analysis and structure.
b) Data: Draw upon the suggested readings indicated for each lecture and workshop and are encouraged to seek out and use additional apposite material including case study examples.
c) Logic and coherence: Introduce the topic, e.g. presenting an overview and indicating the key theoretical and empirical points that will cover the topic or validate your argument. The core of the assignment question answering should then investigate each of these key issues in turn. You should bear in mind the links between each key issue and your main argument and the links between the key issues. The conclusion should summarize and re-emphasize the main argument and key points.
