Web Platform Designer to create a user interface for our software product
$25-50 CAD / hour
We are looking for a freelancer to develop an online platform to act as a user interface for one of our software projects. The work has to be completed in 4 months. The project may be extended by mutual agreement and funding availability.
The aim of the platform is to act as a user interface for our COVID-19 epidemiological modeling software. As such, features within the software need to be translated into visual elements for the end-user to interact with. In addition, a means of visualizing data coming out of our model is needed. We do have some baseline ideas but the freelancer will be working to improve on our existing concepts.
The ideal candidate should have an eye for clean, artful and simple design, possess superior UI skills and be able to translate high-level requirements into beautiful, intuitive, and functional user interfaces. Experience with scientific platforms is highly desired.
Key Responsibilities

● Collaborate with our students, software developers and management team to define user interactions for features included within the software package alongside user interface and web platform requirements
● Create overall concepts for the user experience within our web-based products, ensuring all interactions are intuitive and easy for customers
● Design the aesthetics to be implemented within a website or product, from the layout menus and drop-down options to colors and fonts
● Account for and track the human-computer interaction (HCI) element of a design
● Build storyboards to conceptualize designs and convey project plans to clients and management
● Executing all visual design stages from concept to final hand-off to engineering
● Conceptualizing original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex design roadblocks
● Create, improve and use wireframes, prototypes, style guides, user flows, and effectively communicate your interaction ideas using any of these methods
● Present and defend your design decisions. All your design decisions should be based on the overall design roadmap as well as your own design thinking and fundamental principles (i.e. color theory, visual weight, etc.)
● Continually keep yourself and your design team updated with the latest changes in your industry’s standards
● Conduct testing of completed applications, websites and software to Assess user experience
What we are looking for

● Three or more years of experience and proven track record
● Strong portfolio to be presented and defended during interview
● Hands-on experience creating user interfaces for web portals
● Experience with communicating scientific concepts visually is a plus
● Experience using tools such as Photoshop, Sketch, Illustrator, InVision, UXPin, Quartz
● Understanding of basic front-end languages: HTML5, CSS3 Javascript
● Experience with Python is highly desired
● Be open to receiving objective criticism and improving upon it
● Ability to present your designs and sell your solutions to various stakeholders.
● Ability to solve problems creatively and effectively
● Up-to-date with the latest UI trends, techniques, and technologies
