Hiring a freelance expert to execute a project for you is one of the best strategies companies can make to save time and money without sacrificing quality. With the right outlook, you can find a freelancer with a skill set that is exactly what you need for a particular project, instead of relying on an employee to be a jack of all trades.

However, finding and hiring the right freelancer can be as challenging as finding the right employee. There are many different ways to go about finding freelancers--job boards, networking events, referrals from others in your industry, etc. In my time connecting freelancers with clients, I’ve come to see that detailed project descriptions do wonders in attracting the best freelancers for a particular job. In this blog, I’ll go over the different aspects of writing a project description to attract the right freelancer talent for your needs.

Define Your Needs

Before writing a project description to attract a freelancer, you should define your needs. What is the project scope? What are the specific deliverables? What are the goals of the project? In addition to knowing what you need, you should also think about who you need. Do you need someone with expertise to help you define what this project actually is? Or do you just need someone who can follow instructions? Do you need a freelancer who can accomplish several pieces of one project or are you looking for someone with a very specific skill set?

Knowing what your needs and goals are will help guide your project description. The more detailed and purpose driven you are, the easier it will be for the right freelancer to recognize themselves in your description.

Know Your Timeline

Having a clear project scope and timeline will help the right freelancer know if they have time for your project. The best freelancers know their turnaround times and have their schedules set up months in advance. Try to predict if your project will require extra learning time from a freelancer. Is there company lingo and background information that your freelancer will have to learn before they can get started on a project?

Addressing these necessities in your project description will be helpful for freelancers to predict how much time a job will actually take them and if they will be able to meet your deadlines. If you have a flexible deadline, make this known as well. You can also suggest a set of milestones to be completed at specific times if the project is particularly long.

Decide What You Want to Invest

Hiring a freelancer to complete a project for you is an investment in your company. Whatever they are doing for you, it should bring more value to your company or help you complete a project your company is getting paid for. Knowing what the project you are hiring for is instrumental in knowing what you can pay your freelancer.

Be aware that high-level talent will charge a high rate. Remember that you’re not just paying them for the hours they work for you, you’re paying them for their expertise, and the hours they dedicated to become experts. This is why it’s important to know what the deliverable is worth to you--it will be easy to know what you can afford and what you cannot. Decide what to pay your freelancer based on the value of the deliverable you’re hiring for and it will be a good investment!

Write Your Project Description on Brand

Finally, you’re ready to write your project description! Writing your project description in a way that matches your company’s values and esthetic will help a freelancer recognize if they match your style. Using your brand’s vernacular and including your values can be helpful in attracting exactly what you want.

Remember to include these key elements in your project description:

What the project scope is and what the deliverables are
