Subject Area and Background: Emails can be used to trick readers into responding to a fraudulent request, perhaps from a bank, to attempt to gather users' login [url removed, login to view] phishing attacks are becoming more frequent. Project Description: Examine a range of phishing emails and devise a system that can cross-check the sender's address with legitimate bank addresses and provide an alert to the user if the address of the sender does not coincide with the legitimate addresses of the bank in question. The project will involve examination of the entire email message and the creation of a whitelist of legitimate addresses of potential candidate bank systems. Deliverables: The deliverable will be a system that is capable of sending an alert, visual or audible, or both, to the user when viewing an email whose source is questionable. UNIX systems allow greater flexibility for email message manipulation.
