Contest Brief

I have a language learning website and I am in the process of remodeling it. The website is called "Language Journeys", and deals with the idea of learning a language while traveling.
The user proceeds through different exercises within chapters and levels. The exercises have 3 states: gray (undone), white (available), green (done) - check screenshot.
I am remodeling the website and would need a pic with a new idea. How could I make this design more modern like for example Duolingo?
Please note the new design should either take into account current open source pictures, or maybe no pictures at all. I do not currently have the resources for too many custom illustrations. You can also remove the sidebar if not necessary in new design.
If you are thinking in terms of traveling through a map please note it should be easy to integrate. I do not need just fancy ideas, but practical too.
