Contest Brief

This is a personal project, and meant to be a gift for an old sailor. This is by no means an original concept or idea, but it's important that this one be unique. I'm hoping for something simple, and a bit "messy" like in the example. I need it to be far better in quality, as it will be a print-out to put up in their home.

The piece is called "A Sea Worthy of Madmen". It's mean to be dark and confusing. A ship alone, and small in comparison to the sea around it. The waves are high and dangerous, caused by a wicked storm that strikes down at the ocean below. The ship doesn't have to show crew on it - but if it does they should be in action, working together, or blurred to obscurity as in the example.

This does NOT have to be black and white. Any dark styles are welcome.

Art Style
Not looking for an illustration with fine details, but rather a stylized take on the "ship at stormy seas" style painting. It could be done with charcoal, it could be done with water colors, it really doesn't matter. We're trying to capture a feeling of heroism against the elements, and fighting against an unbeatable faceless foe. The example image is very close to what we're looking for, but you're not constricted to just what you see there.

The Ship
Should not look peaceful - should be tilted or straining, the sails should be a mess or torn. The deck is a flurry of activity of sailors working together or in chaos to right their ship in the face of the storm.

The sea
Should have tall and violent waves crashing down at the ship. Should also keep to the dark theme - if there are any blues they are deep and dark. The sea is almost an abyss.

The storm
Should look quite foreboding - should have lighting crashing down into the sea, and the clouds should be pitch black. No stars or moon should show through the clouds.
