Contest Brief

Absolicon is a public listed solar energy in Sweden developing parabolic solar concentrators for industries. We need illustrations to explain concepts in our business plan to be used both in promotional material and in diskussions with governmental bodies. We now ask for proposals and hope to find an illustrator who we can work with in the future for this kind of work.

The illustration should explain the concept of Zero CO2 emission factory using a 1 page illustration containing 6 different parts. Read the specification closely and take note of every word! Post your entry quickly and we will provide feedback to help you see the vision we have with the illustration. If your entry is very good, but an other illustrator is the winner, we'll award up to three "second prices" of $100 to encourage your good work.

Thank you for your work! It was tricky to choose between the top entries. The quality of the details was in the end the prizewinning differential.

Hi Joakim, first of all good luck to the 3 contestants left in. Secondly, I understand why you judged the contest like this (everyone bar the top 3 rejected). But I’m not sure if it was the right way of doing it. It is a contest, albeit a very attractive contest regarding prize (and up to three "second prices"). So you should have let us compete to the end, especially as there were more than one prize. I don't think you completely understood that when a designer pays to seal their work, no-one can see their entry or comments.

So when you mentioned that the top designs were already on 5 rounds of comments, it was disappointing that you had already made up your mind (also you didnt want to go through the different rounds of comments to everyone, hence copy and paste replies of thank you but no thank you). You had no idea what I had planned (or others) for the rest of my illustration. What was disappointing the most, was the quick “rejection”. Especially as it wasn't like a quick logo contest, but a complex reading of the brief, skill and time required. Anyway, I’ll stop ranting, I just wanted to say something for all the other contestants not in the top 3. Thanks.

Thank you for your comments. This was the fist time I tried this kind of competition and I learnt a lot. The biggest problem I think is that the format lure designers to put in a big job, even as only one (oar a few) can get the prize. This is not only a problem for the designers, but also for me trying to give constructive criticism to the contestants. I thought I had done a good draft, but next time I will put even more work to the draft, trying to save hours on comments. My solution with 81 entries was to focus on a few who came in early and reject those who clearly was behind in the process. Unfortunately, this this is unfair to newcomers and I also did some mistakes rejecting good entries and unfair claiming that some entries was copies. I will try to be even more humble and careful next time. I was surprised to learn that you could pay to keep your entry secret. Thank you again all who put time into the contest!

Please add an other (simple) design element - the energy storage. Make it as a big tank, on a square of it's own, standing next to the factory. I indicate on each of the four top contestant where it can be put. Image search on google for "energy storage tank".

I feel that you have all put in a lot of good work, and i don't want (most of you ) to invest any more. It it now up to the top contestants who have been in the full process to continue to work on their entries to get the first price. i will also award two second prizes of $100.

Please, no new entries. Compared to the best entries with 5+ rounds of comments and improvements, I can not see how a new proposal you could improve (without straight copying the best entry). Thank you for you effort anyway! best regards, Joakim

Hello, but we still cannot see the "best entries" as you said. So it is unfair if you say that we have to read your comments on the best entries, as we cannot see your comments there neither. And it's unfair to say that other freelancers are simply copying them, because we cannot see those best entries as I said before. Regards.

Sorry, we believe we will have a better final result (and it saves us a lot of work) if all freelancers can see the entries and our comments on them.

Hi! I'm sorry, but I dont understand what you want. My entry didnt originate from #22, but from your documents. I dont want to sound full of myself, but my entry is much more well polished then others that I can see and I got 1 star? What are you expecting then? Thanks

I apologize, you are correct. The reason you got only one star was that I am focused on the concept of the squares and the proportion of the different parts surface area.

Please note that the entry need to be vector graphic to we can zoom in and scale the image. One challenge I see among entries is to make the individual components easy to see and understand the function, even as they need to fit to scale mor or less. I also see similarities like #37, #28 originated from #22 - please look for inspiration in the documentation too!

New design for the solar concentrator field. It was difficult forr many to illustrate our solar concentrator, covered with glass. Use instead this design for the solar concentrator field!
Use this photo as model: https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/sopogys-small-concentrated-solar-power …but make them longer – in reality they are 6 meters by 1 meter.
On the six-square field, there should be 8, 10 or 12 units - fewer units may enable larger size to make them more "iconic". #21 is one good example, but they are a little small...

The road should not have squares of it's own, is can be drawn soft on green squares like on like on the lower of the two hand-made illustrations I made of the factory (1) in the documentation.

All important information will be posted here. Entry #3 has a good proposition between the areas. please note that the solar concentrators should only have 2x3 squares, the drawing is correct, but the number is wrong in the documentation. Entry #17 has a good design on most of the components, but it is difficult to understand for a viewer what is the PV and the concentrators as they are small and the forest so big. Maybe the items can be more iconic to explain the function.

I deleted some entries that we have taken account of, but that doesn't clarify more than what is already on the board. Please, no offence, I have taken note of the comment! I will continue to try to keep the clarification board only containing relevant clarifications. But the most important clarifications will be found as my comments on the best entries, how they can improve!

We can't see the comments on entry #3 #1 or #13 or other sealed entries. Therefore we don't understand what you mean when you tell us to check the comment on #3 (for example).

We will immediately award when we have a good enough entry to avoid copycat problems. In awarding the prize, we will also take into account the dialogue we have with the freelancer during the contest. We need to find someone to cooperate with in the future who understand our comments.

Clarification, the final illustration must be in vector format, e.g. illustrator. It will be used not only in printed brochures but also as the backdrop of an exhibition stand, being enlarged to 2 m x 2 m (!).

In the documentation, the size of the solar concentrator field (2) is drawn as 2 x 3 squares, but the text says 2 x 6. The correct size is 2x3 (same as the gray area for the factory).
