Contest Brief
An introduction:
Hi there, my name is Laurens Martens and I’m 30 years of age. I live in the Netherlands and I am in requirement of a logo for my start-up company. I am a relaxed and friendly person, surrounded by lovely people and I want to help people get over their own mental blocks.
I'm starting a practice as a hypnotherapist and I am trained in NLP as well. My work consists of getting rid of fears and limitations that people have in their mind. Even freeing people from obsessive thoughts (created by traumas), or psychosomatic diseases (like migraines, eczema or allergies).
Hypnotherapy is about solving problems under hypnosis. It is not the weird voodoo mind control ‘hypnosis’ you see on TV or in movies. Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened focus, suggestibility and relaxation. People do not lose control; they are in control the entire time. They are not asleep (as the name suggests), but are actually hyper attentive. If you want more information on the subject you can read an article about it here: https://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/extrasensory-perceptions/hypnosis.htm
When people are freed from their limiting beliefs, they will need coaching. Their mind and behavior will need to adjust to their new reality. This aftercare is also a service I provide. This way of treating people promotes autonomy, making sure people aren’t depending on drugs to change their state or suppress their problem.
Hypnotherapy has a higher success rate than Psychoanalysis or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The latter are more mainstream, but study shows they are less effective. A comparative study of American Health Magazine shows that hypnotherapy has a success rate of 93% after 6 sessions, compared to psychoanalysis (38% after 600 sessions) and Cognitive behavioral therapy (72% after 22 sessions).
Besides, I don’t use labels to categorize my clients according to their ‘disorder’. Each person has a different representation of their reality and I treat them as a unique individual. Sometimes I will be provocative or make playful tongue-in-cheek statements. This way, when they look back, they will laugh at what used to be their problem (or at least feel neutral about it).
The assignment:
The company's name is Deze Man (translated to This Man (or guy)). The slogan is "(Geeft) het zetje dat je nodig hebt" (translated to "(gives you) the nudge you need"). The company icon is a slinky. This must be incorporated into the logo. The slogan doesn’t need to be incorporated in the logo.
I envision the slinky to be in motion. Maybe a hand/finger/letter gives it a push; maybe it bounces of the letters. I'll leave that to your creativity. Of course, you are free to hand-in anything you like and incorporate other symbols, if you feel these add to the logo or values.
Just don’t add any symbols that convey the voodoo-like ‘hypnosis’ I mentioned earlier, like a pendulum or the ‘hypnotic eye’. A spiral is often associated with hypnotism, maybe you can incorporate it in the slinky, but again this is not necessary.
The logo file should be a vector file.
Must incorporate:
- a slinky (object)
- "Deze Man" (text)
optional:
- "Het zetje dat je nodig hebt" (slogan)
Color scheme: Up to you.
Some key values the logo should convey:
Helpful
Compassionate
Empowering
Promote Autonomy (self-sustainability)
No-Nonsense
Scientific
Natural
Resolving
Playful
I am eager to see what you guys/girls will come up with. Best of luck to all of you!
Feedback will be given on 16th of May and 23rd of May, from 10.00 a.m. to 12 p.m. (GMT +1)

“Simeon was very nice to work with. He gave me a concept art which was really standing out from the crowd. The concept looked very professional and he captured the essence of the briefing. I asked him to make adjustments to the logo and so he did, without question. He came up with an even better logo. After some feedback he perfected the logo, until I was completely satisfied with it. When delivering the files he gave me all I could ask for (various products of the same concept: e.g. black/white/different file formats). Even giving me aftercare while the product was delivered. I'll definitely hire him again for making other print designs (e.g. business cards), and so should anyone else in need for a professional designer.”
