Contest Brief
Looking for cover art for a scientific journal (Cell press, see cell.com for cover art examples). Submissions will be required to pass a plagiarism/copy-write check and must be original and come with all copy-write permission to publish as cover of the journal and on line, as well as permission to use for any press releases etc. The winning artist must state the entries are their original work and must agree to allow this work to be published online by either the academic journal or the contest runners website.
The cover art is for a scientific study that uses fruit flies and mice genetic model systems to show that artificial sweeteners (in the context of a balanced diet) make animals feel more hungry, eat more, and actually alter how real sugar tastes (eating artificial sweeteners make real sugar taste much better). We found an artificial sweetener did this by disrupting the sweet vs energy balance of food, and made the animals think that they had fasted after consuming an artificially sweetened nutritious diet.
Often with cover art, one simple aesthetically pleasing message is sufficient, i.e. no need to tell the whole story visually, but focusing on one aspect might be successful. For example an image that depicts sugar looking/tasting different, or just a image depicting hunger, etc. Abstract images that may address the mood of such a state are also acceptable.
We require minimum three options to submit to the journal, so the winning design will be based on the strength of at least three independent submissions as a package.
I have included a PDF with some of the data from the paper, so you can see how data is presented in this study if that helps. Also have included images of fruit flies taken from the web so you can see what these animals look like, but we dont own these images.
Please remember three images required per submission, we then submit these three to the journal as one package.

no text is required, jsut imaging that there is text at the top. The journal picks the text after they select an image.
