Contest Brief

We want some product design ideas for a stand/holder for a 9Kg/20lb gas bottle. There are many different gas bottle holders already available, which keep your bottle upright when transporting the gas bottle in the car. However they are very large and take up a lot of room in shops and also for shipping.

We are looking for a CREATIVE design for this product which will keep the gas bottle steady when in the car so the bottle doesn't fall over. When full, the weight of the bottle is around 20Kg and empty around 8Kg.

We are looking for INNOVATIVE design, so product can fold or extend to the full size, but when packed, it is much much smaller. Think about a folding chair, it packs into a small bag, but extends to much bigger size. Or a clothes rack which folds down and then extends to much bigger size.

We want the product to be simple, so its inexpensive and easy to manufacture. It also needs to be easy for people to use. We don't want many parts as they can get lost.

I have attached photos to show some examples of gas bottle holders already available, and also some ideas of folding products just for reference.

The most important thing is that it can be PACKAGED in much smaller box than the full size of product.

Please note, not all gas bottles are the same size. They may have slightly different size ring on bottom and height of ring on bottom. So it must be adjustable to fit ALL bottles

Looking forward to your ideas. PS We are looking for an Industrial/product designer that can do more work for us also in the future.

You must equip the device on the bottom with anti-slide material and/or form like spikes

How do you see the base gripping the carpet of the car boot, so it doesn't just slide around. When car is turning, it will slide around very easily and can hit the sides of the boot. We have tested some designs, and the entire unit slides around very easily when turning car.

When we test now different methods, the best way is in the image I just posted " Propane tank stabiliser". Please look at this image. When we test it, bottle very secure. Problem is it is TOO BIG in box. The size of the actual product is 38cm x 38cm x 6cm height. The box is even bigger. But it works! We just need to find clever and simple way to make it able to be much smaller package.

The feet connected to the bottom ring doesnt work. It is too unstable. We bought some feet that already exist and the bottle fell over after going over 1 speed bump. We even used 4 feet

In the brief, you say that the bottle should remain upright in the car. Do you mean that it should stay upright also on soft upholstery?

I provided the idea as you need. If you like and if you want to work on it, award the project and I will give you a perfect design. I keep every aspect of product in my mind it will serve you as you like. But whole design is not worth for 50$ only.

we have been testing out some of these designs - most will just cause the bottle to flip over when go over a bump or round a corner. Not actually stopping the bottle from really falling over. Do you have any more ideas? If you look at my original brief, there is a unit made of plastic, which the bottle sits in. This is very bulky but it works! We need to have something like those plastic versions but able to be Packed smaller

It will make it weak and costly if you fold it more.

Not all gas bottles have the same size bottom ring diameter. So if securing the bottle using the bottom ring, it must be adjustable, because it can vary from 18cm to 23cm the ring. Also the gas bottle has only 1cm clearance at the very bottom of cyclinder and bottom of the ring ( ground) and the ring height on the outside can also vary from as little as 2-3 cm
