How to Cancel a Milestone Payment

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more secure payment scheme than Freelancer’s. The Milestone Payment System allows the secure transfer of funds from employer to freelancer. Imagine how risky it would be to pay outside of Freelancer.com. There are no assurances elsewhere.

The Milestone Payment System was put in place to safeguard both the employer’s and freelancer’s interests. A project is off to a good start when the employer creates a Milestone (or Milestones). This provides an incentive for the freelancer to get the project underway and to perform diligently, knowing the employer is serious about making it work.

When a Milestone Payment is created, the amount will be put on hold. At this point, the employer is advised never to release Milestones until designated tasks or products have been submitted. It is the employer's right to withhold the Milestone pending full satisfaction.

There are instances, though, when canceling a Milestone Payment is necessary, such as when both parties decide to decrease the bid amount or value of the project. The freelancer can cancel it with just a few steps.

In cases that necessitate cancellation – an example is when the employer mistakenly creates a Milestone in excess of what was agreed upon – it would fall on the freelancer to do the honorable thing and cancel.

In such cases where the project doesn’t turn out well and the employer stakes his claim on his money, the Dispute Resolution System may be used. Do note that only the employer can release the Milestone, and only the freelancer can cancel. If the employer wishes to waive the project and insists on getting the Milestone back, there is no other recourse but to dispute it.

So how does a freelancer cancel a Milestone Payment? This can be done by going over to the project page (the project relating to the Milestone):

1. Select the Milestones tab.

2. Locate the Milestone Payment.

3. Click the down arrow beside Request Release and select Cancel.

Alternatively, it can be done through the Financial Dashboard. From there, the same steps as above can be followed:

1. Select the Milestones tab.

2. Check if Incoming is selected.

3. Locate the Milestone Payment.

4. Click the down arrow beside Request Release and select Cancel.
