Need to fetch emails in IMAP faster

Hello, just looking for a real solution so we can implement.
We have an application that is fetching emails in IMAP.
I am looking for a better and faster solution.
1. Currently, it is taking too long to load the imap when it is pressed. Is there anyway to fetch emails each minute so when user clicks their inbox, all of the emails are already present?
2. Can this be done via cron? Is php best for this?
I am looking for speed in the application. It is taking over 40 seconds now and sometimes we get a 500 error.
