Android App to record retail merchandise information

Objective: Build an app to record product information of retail merchandise such as books, movie DVDs, and grocery items. Requirements: 1. Functional Capabilities a) Product Cataloging. Allow a user to store product information into a cloud database. Information such as the bar code, a picture of the product, place and date of the product purchased, price etc. The user is allowed to use the phone's camera to take pictures of a product item. Using this app, a user can complete the whole process in 3 easy steps - Scan the product's bar code (support typical bar codes such as BAR39, ISBN etc) - Take photos of the product (minimum one, but no more than 3) - Enter additional information including price, date of purchase, quantity purchased, comments (this step is optional) - The app will auto record other meta data such as creation date/time, geo-location, phone type, phone owner identity or phone IME that can uniquely identify the user - A Save/Upload button and a Cancel operation button are presented in the last step b) In-App User registration - provide an interface to allow user to register a new account - profile information is stored in the cloud database - at next launching of the app, the user will have no need to re-login again c) Back end maintenance screen - a web front end to query the database (nothing fancy, just present enough details for an administrator to query information in the database is adequate) 2. Data Structure and System design a) communication between the mobile phone and the remote database over HTTP/HTTPS stateful protocol / XML b) multi-language support and localization using resource files c) use opensource technologies at the back end / LAMP and/or python d) backend runs on linux (ubuntu preferred) e) web admin console OK to use any PHP or any other python webapp framework such as Django 3. Quality a) user friendly and clean interface b) simple and easy to use even for seniors and minors or person with little computing skills c) adequate documentation ([login to view URL], installation guide, troubleshooting guide) Bidders will be judged based on a) the quality of the proposal b) competence in building mobile apps and back end data stores c) samples of source code written for other projects d) previous track records The end product built for this project will become part of a sub-module of a much bigger project.
