Develop a research question that ties together genetic heritability with the concepts of selection/fitness, genetic drift and/or species/speciation to build a picture of phylogenetic relationship that can speak to the evolution of your species of interest.
Important factors to include:
A hypothesis regarding the relationship between the species
Trait differences in response to differing habitats led to divergent genetic code
Species that are seemingly unrelated are genetically more similar due to adaptation to a particular environment
Competition between two very similar species led to divergence in genetic code
Human sub-populations diverged in certain genes in response to varying environmental pressures or randomly as a result of genetic drift in isolated populations
Use the online nucleotide (and protein) sequence databases to obtain sequences relevant to your species and trait of interest.
Genbank and NCBI BLAST
These nucleotide sequences will be used as results to support the hypothesis.
Perform (multiple) alignments of the sequences and interpret the results. The results/discussion section should analyze the alignments and trees produced by the queries.
The only requirement is that there is at least one tree and one alignment generated included in the final paper.
