Some of the notable literary devices brought out in the poem “butterflies” by Jose Asunction are alliteration and personification. Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonants in the poem not necessarily after word to word for example in the poem repeated constants has been placed in adjacent lines. Alliteration brings some musical rhythm to the poem by stressing on the syllables. It directs a reader to a particular part of the text. Personification is giving life to objects in order to pass the message. In the poem, butterflies have been used to express motions as well as complete actions. Therefore, readers can connect with the objects used in the poem from a human perspective. They can comprehend, sympathise and act in response to the objects used in the poem. The main purpose of the poem is to pass a message of a loved one’s demise. It is evident that the poet is expressing loss in the poem. The butterfly emerging from its cocoon and flying to the sky represents a life lost. The central theme of the poem is sadness of losing a close who he watched through their struggles and wins. The poet expresses their sad emotions all through the poem.
