Outline Specifications are used at the Design Development phase of a project to begin fixing the particular materials, methods and systems intended to be used on a project. Because at this stage, the project is only minimally developed, Outline Specs use narrative descriptions to generally describe the design intent at this point of development and can be used as checklists or added to as materials and systems are more detailed during development of the design and ultimately during the construction documents part of the work.

Your part is to prepare an Outline Spec for the building represented by the wall section which is included with this description. You are to write the outline specs for Divisions 03, through 09, as applicable – based on what is indicated on the preliminary wall section. Be aware that this is actually a “final” wall section with information that is further developed than what you would have at the design development stage

You will find a general list of divisions in your book of page 367, and a more detailed (abridged version) of the most frequently used section titles under each division beginning on page 368 and through page 371. Use this as a guide to select which sections you feel are applicable to the section in question. Follow the example used in the lecture notes and remember that sections which are not used should still be listed but shown as “not used.”

RESEARCH for additional information on writing outline specifications and you may also search the web for examples -BUT REMEMBER TO APPLY THEM TO THIS SECTION. Do not simply copy un-applicable verbiage from an example that makes no sense to the project as it will count against you!

Finally, be aware that “technical writing” is different from storytelling, business letters and other more frequently used documentation. It would most likely help you to search for literature on Technical Writing ONLINE .

It is understood that you do not have all the information you need for your specifications to accurately reflect the final building that resulted from this section. Instead your score will be developed from a combination of factors, including:

 If you properly identify and respond to the sections that are applicable, based on the section.

 Completeness of information provided. The accuracy will not be as important as will be whether you covered the primary items within each section.

 Format of the documents with respect to the proper CSI format for outline specifications.

 The content and “voice” of your narrative. Particularly whether it is appropriate to a technical document.
