Hi, you will be exploring the WIDA "Can Do" Descriptors AND the WIDA ELD Standards.(reading resources are below)
The "Can- Do" Descriptors. The documents are a fantastic guide by grade level, content, and language domain (r,w,s,l). When you get an LEP student and information on their proficiency level (i.e. Level 2 in speaking and listening, but a level 3 in reading and writing), the question all teachers should have is; "What do those numbers mean?". The Can Do descriptors describe what a student can do at that given proficiency level, for example, with a 3 reading level, 2 speaking/listening level, and a 4 writing level. It is an excellent matrix of descriptive information to use as a guide for differentiating lesson plans. Please read how some teachers are using the Can Do descriptors to plan instruction for their ELLs. Even though you do not teach the grade level the example provides, look through it anyway. It will five you ideas of how to approach the Can Do descriptors. (The high school examples are the most complete) [login to view URL] (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year the WIDA Screener is the new English language screening tool for the 2nd semester of 1st grade-12th grade in Illinois. For these grades, the WIDA Screener replaces both the MODEL and the W-APT screening tool.
The WIDA screener, in online and paper format, is a newly developed placement test aligned to WIDA's standard setting. The online version will function similarly to the online version of ACCESS 2.0, using the WIDA AMS website and DRC software components. However, the online system will only score the listening and reading domains. Writing and speaking will be scored by local district staff. The online WIDA Screener is available at no cost to IL districts. The paper version is available for purchase in the WIDA Store (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Information about trainings for the WIDA screener can be found at [login to view URL] (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
Illinois will continue to use the WIDA MODEL for screening in Kindergarten and the 1st semester of 1st grade.
