TIP SHEET INSTRUCTIONS ASSESSMENT THREE 1007HSV MAJOR REPORT – AGENCY WEBSITE Why am I asked to do this task? As a future human services practitioner you will require skills in searching on the internet for information about: a) human service agencies b) evidence based practice (EBP) The ability to effectively find out about services and information with and on behalf of service users is very powerful. In doing so, you link people up with resources that can have a significant impact on their wellbeing. There is also an increasing need for services to justify that their service delivery methods are consistent with EBP. What steps do I take to complete the task? To complete the task you are required to: 1) Select ONE ONLY of the following agency websites: • Multilink (Logan City, QLD) [login to view URL] • Richmond Fellowship (Queensland) [login to view URL] • Headspace (Meadowbrook, QLD) with links to Headspace Australia national site [login to view URL] • Relationships Australia (Queensland) [login to view URL] • Micah Projects (West End, Brisbane, QLD) [login to view URL] 2) Search the agency website to seek information for your report. 3) Search the Griffith University library catalogue/databases for THREE peer reviewed journal articles (evidence-based literature) relevant to service users/client group and any aspect of the services provided by the agency. If the agency provides services to multiple client groups, narrow your evidence based literature to ONE specific client group/service provided by the agency. 4) Use the following subheadings (A- H, below) for your report. Within each subheading, • summarise key information and; • evaluate any strengths, gaps or limitations in the information and whether the information is easy for you as an emerging practitioner to find and understand A. Purpose of the organisation B. Services Provided C. Client group/s D. Organisational structure E. Funding F. Information provided about social issues/ problems relevant to the services of the agency G. Theoretical Approach e.g. Social Justice, Empowerment, Anti-Oppressive, Strengths-based H. Discussion of Evidence Based Literature relevant to needs of clients served by the agency – (minimum 500 words) I. References Can I choose a different agency website to the ones listed? No. Please choose from the list. What if the website I choose does not have information relevant to each required heading? It is not expected that each website will have the same amount or types of information. This is why you are asked to summarise what information is there, and then evaluate any strengths, gaps or limitations in the information and whether the information is easy for you as an emerging practitioner to find and understand. How do I structure the report and what style of writing should I use? You MUST use headings for this report. It is not an essay. The headings are provided in the Report Headings Template in the Assessments Folder on L@G. Download the Word file template and use the headings provided. Do NOT use first person or ‘I’. This is not a reflective essay. Examples of how to summarise and evaluate: The website uses terminology such as social inclusion when it states its mission and values but does not define what this means [summary]. This terminology may be unfamiliar for an emerging human service practitioner, and possibly, many clients [evaluation]. The website provides an overview of national statistics about homelessness. It also includes the numbers of clients that have been provided services nationally by the agency in the past year [summary]. This information makes it clear for an emerging human service practitioner to understand how much of an impact the service has nation-wide, and the types of ways that clients are assisted [evaluation]. The website does not provide any information about the social issue of homelessness, such as statistics about the rate and types of homelessness [summary]. However the website provides case examples and videos and this makes it very easy to understand how homelessness is experienced by individuals [evaluation]. The agency received $***** million dollars in funding from the Queensland Government in the financial year 2013-2014, and the majority of this was spent on…..[summary]. However the information about how the organisation is funded was not easy to find on the website. It was located in a link that was called Executive Reports [evaluation]. How do I access information about my selected human service agency? Just as the physical waiting area of an agency has differing degrees of accessibility, so does information on websites. When searching for information you will notice that some information appears in a very accessible format and some does not. You will need to open all of the tabs on the website – some sites have links to national websites that contain even more information. Some information is presented in a way that is intended to be accessible to service users, and other information is intended to be accessible for practitioners. Remember, information is power. We need to assist service users to access it as effectively as possible, and we need to access it ourselves to inform our practice as workers too. For your major report, the following prompt questions may assist: Purpose of the Organisation • Does the Agency have a mission and values statement? • What explicit principles are stated and how might these influence client services? (e.g. A client has a right to confidentiality and to know the limits of confidentiality) • Does the website provide information about how are principles and values are operationalised/put into practice? Services Provided • What types of specific services are provided? • Does the website state information about steps taken in the assessment process and intervention process? • What outputs and outcomes do they seek and/or achieve for clients? • Any information about types of intervention- whether time limited, use of specific assessment tools or intervention programs? • Is there information provided about any evidence base that suggests their services are effective in achieving outcomes? • Is there information about service evaluation processes? • How do clients give feedback about the service? • How is this feedback gathered and used? Client Groups • Who uses the service? • What are clients of the service called? (eg: Service users or clients or consumers or constituents; why do they use the language they do) • Women, people, men, families, couples? • Is there clear information about eligibility criteria for services? Do clients have to have a certain income, live in a geographical area? Meet a needs test? • Is there information about referral options for clients who are not eligible? • What rights do clients have? Risks to clients/Protection of client rights. How are these rights managed? • Client grievance/complaint/feedback processes? Organisational Structure • Is it a government organisation? NGO community-based? NGO church-based? Private – for profit or not for profit? Other? • Is there a Board or Committee of Management? • Is there client or staff input to management? • How are operations organised e.g. programs, program components, model of service? • How is the organization staffed – structure, roles, accountability? How many staff? Paid/volunteers? Qualifications required? • Any information about staff training- supervision- internal or external/both? • Award/pay rates and work conditions for staff? Funding • Is the agency Commonwealth, State, Local Government-funded? • How much funding does it receive in a year? • Any information about how funding is allocated within the organisation? • Does the organisation receive donations, or fundraise through events? • What is the funding mix? Information provided about social issues/ problems relevant to the services of the agency • Is there information about the social issues/problems that the service aims to address? • Is it statistical information, self-help information, information educating the community? • Is it suitable to practitioners, client group, both? Theoretical Approaches e.g. Social Justice, Empowerment, Anti-Oppressive, Strengths-based • Does the website state which theories/perspective and approaches are taken? Is it explicit or implicit? • Any information about human rights, social justice, power issues? • What about practice frameworks (organisational frameworks) and how these inform how assessment and intervention are undertaken? • Does the website present any Evidence Based Practice (EBP) information or literature? • Information about rights – of clients, of workers? How do I access information about Evidence Based Practice? For Section H of your Major Report, you will need to discuss a minimum of THREE pieces of EBP literature relevant to the client group serviced by the agency. Remember EBP is defined as the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and client values in making practice decisions’ (Sacket, Strauss, Richardson, Rosenberg and Haynes, 2000). EBP has three components: Therefore, it is acceptable to source credible literature that provides guidance about either: 1. Best research evidence 2. Clinical expertise 3. Client Values and preferences EBP literature relevant to the human services can be found in: • Peer reviewed journal articles about research and clinical expertise • Research reports published by government and other organisations • Practice standards documents published by professional associations Before we give some examples of how to search for EBP literature, a few issues need to be clarified. Isn’t EBP research literature mostly about medicine and health? One of the issues faced by practitioners in social work and human services is that most of the published EBP research focuses on medical aspects of health. There is even a Griffith University subject guide for EBP in medicine instructing students how to ‘find the evidence’ [login to view URL] You will also find a number of comprehensive databases of systematic reviews relating to medicine. These are available through the Griffith Library guides and include the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (via EBSCOhost), PubMed, and Best Practice [login to view URL] If you wish to browse through one of these medical databases to find information about best practice when working with mental health, you can still search within these databases using relevant search terms within psychiatry. Check out: Cochrane Library [login to view URL] Best Practice – Psychiatry [login to view URL] Which library database/s and journals are recommended for peer reviewed EBP literature in social work and human services? When seeking research that relates to health aspects of human service practice, the library database that best covers EBP literature for allied health is CINAHL Plus with Full Text. CINAHL stands for the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature and is the largest and most in-depth nursing research database. Social work is also considered an allied health service. [login to view URL] Other databases can be a source of human services EBP literature as well and these are listed on the: Griffith University Library Guide: Human services and social work :Journal articles [login to view URL] What other sources can be used for EBP literature? Search for practice standards documents that have been formulated by rigorous consultation processes and reviews of literature. In Australia, a range of practice standards documents are published by the Australian Association of Social Workers, and these can be considered as part of EBP literature.
