**Thebrief is to produce a detailed specification for a software application.? More than one coder may be selected todo this.? The specs produced underthis project will be reviewed and one may then be chosen as the basis for theapplication itself.? Such subsequentdevelopment of the application from the spec will form a separate RAC project forwhich bids will be invited (i.e. it will not necessarily be awarded to thecoder who submits the chosen spec.)** **? ** Theapplication eventually required is a tool to support users employing drama theory(see below) to help them manage situations involving conflict and co-operation.? The intention is that the tool would bemade available to users either as cross-platform shareware (Windows/Mac) or (more likely) asa web application through an ASP: proposals for both routes will be considered.? ? ? ? ## Deliverables Dramatheory provides a structure for the analysis of human interactions andindicates (it does not prescribe) ways in which the inevitableconfrontations might be handled.? The core notion is that ‘characters’ who interact each have a ‘stand’(comprising their position, stated intentions and doubts) and that when standsare incompatible, the characters will experience ‘dilemmas’ (three genericdilemmas are defined) that pressure them to change their stand or otherwisemodify the interaction. ? Theoriginal version of drama theory (referred to now as DT1) and applications arecovered in a number of books including: Jim Bryant (2003) *The Six Dilemmas of Collaborati*on (Wiley: Chichester) Nigel Howard (1999) Confrontation Analysis ([[login to view URL]][1]) Thetheory was simplified and enhanced in 2007 and a new version (called DT2) wasproposed.? Details of this and ofapplications (mainly using DT1) can be found at the forum: [[login to view URL]][2]. It is notessential that the coder for the present project should be proficient in usingdrama theory, but a good appreciation of the framework and of its logical basewill be useful (and essential in the follow-up application development project). ? There arealready software applications in this field (though none based on DT2) andprospective coders should look at these before bidding (see attachment forlinks).? The buyer has used VisualBasic for Windows to produce a trial software application called **DRAMA**, a draft manual for which isattached.? While this indicates thesort of functionality required in the present project the interface isdefinitely not prescriptive: indeed it is hoped that coders will suggest noveland creative ways for presenting, editing and handling information within thelanguage of drama theory.? Forexample, while it is likely that such core concepts as the ‘power-interestgrid’ and the ‘option board’ would remain, these might be presented in newways.? Elsewhere, the succession ofdialogue boxes presented in the dilemma management process is clumsy and cansurely be bettered.
