Hi Peppa, The developer skills needed to write the technical specifications document are mainly architectural. They involve working which parts of the system require flexibility and which will be more stable as well as assessing the impact of non-functional requirements like performance, redundancy, failover support and extensibility. Once there is a good understanding which requirements are the most important, the challenge is to have a clear set of design guidelines that will allow developers to begin making quick progress without having to redesign and re-architect later on. The technical specs should make it easy to met the requirements that that absolutely have to be there to sell the software. The design shouldn't lock in expensive to build "nice-to-have" features, but still mindful of the fact that they will become important later on and still need to be implementable. I've had a reasonable amount of experience dealing with this in my most recent full-time role where I was responsible for redesigning the 3D front end of a mining port control system.
