When we were children, our grandparents told us stories with morals. As we grew up, we conveniently forgot them. But truth is, those morals are tucked away deep into our psyche and all we need to do is dig them out. Here is a short story that may remind you of those days:

Once upon a time, there was a poor boy named Shankar. One day, while he was crossing the forest carrying some logs of wood, he saw an old, hungry man. Since Shankar didn’t have any food either, he went on. On his way, he met a deer that was thirsty. He could not help the deer either, and so he went ahead. A few steps later, he met a man who needed some wood to build a camp. Shankar gave this man some wood and in return asked the man for some food and water. Shankar then went back and gave the old man some food and deer some water.

On the way back to the forest to find some more wood, Shankar accidently fell in a well. The old man heard his voice and helped him out of the well. Shankar was also hurt and so the deer ran quickly in the forest to get some herbs to cure Shankar.

Moral of the story: ‘if you help others during their times of distress, they will help you back in yours’.
