Contest Brief

****ILLUSTRATOR REQUIRED with feedback/ideas on refining the storyboard narrative****

OVERVIEW
Every person should have the opportunity to live a long and healthy life and protected from the dangers of UVA/UVB sun ray exposure when active outdoors. Through this children's book project, I am to further instilling sun safe habits to the youth of Australia/worldwide early on in their lives. Target audience will be libraries/early schooling organizations/online etc.
Through this mission of purpose and awareness, a children’s graphic book (visual-graphic children's book (target age of 5-10 years) building awareness around sunscreen use, the dangers of sunburn and UV exposure and the importance of looking after your skin/health when out in the sun.

Looking for the illustration to be very Australian-culture based, bringing in Australian scenery, Caucasian main characters, Australian animals and lifestyle / culture in the artwork. Also looking for a creative mind to collaborate with their own storyboarding input/narrative and direction ideas the book should follow.

ABOUT THE CLIENT
In early 2017, Dylan was diagnosed with a Melanoma Skin Cancer. Happily, currently Melanoma-free and proactive in all mole changes with regular checkups, he has chosen to take his life-altering experience and use it as a vehicle for good. Through his ambition, drive and entrepreneurial work ethic, he has started a sunscreen company Happy Skin Pty. Ltd., that promotes the sun safe practices of using sunscreen whilst outdoors year-round and advocating for skin cancer awareness and research.

Storyboard (idea)
Title: THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN SUNSCREEN
Jack is a normal boy from Bondi, New South Wales in Australia. He loves playing Australian Rules Football, going to the beach with his Mum, Dad and dog Ruby and playing with his friends at School at recess.

One day while visiting the Beach, with the help of his Mum and Dad learning about applying Sunscreen, this allowed him to put on his 'shield' to protect his skin and gain superhero powers as CAPTAIN SUNSCREEN.

To help protect his friends and family from being burnt from the Sun, Captain Sunscreen uses his superpowers to help his friends to also learn about protecting their skin through these five steps:
- Wearing sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible.
- Applying SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours when outdoors or more often if perspiring or swimming.
- Wearing a broad-brimmed hat that shades your face, neck and ears.
- Finding shade when outdoors at the beach/school etc.
- Putting on sunglasses.
(Maybe each of these things could be part of Captain Sunscreens costume, where the sunscreen is his shield, hat and sunglasses are his helmet etc.

THEME
The idea behind the story is to leverage the popularity of the Marvel Super movies that kids love and show that by using sunscreen and being sunsafe they too can be a superhero and protect.

AUSTRALIAN ELEMENTS: (How they could fit in)
Bondi Beach/Australian beach scenery could be a main backdrop of the story.
Other Australian elements of scenery could be gumtrees with Koalas, Kangaroos, Cockatoo/rosellas could be in picture.

Bondi Lifeguards are a big piece of Australian culture, so we could tie in the red and yellow flags at the beach (see Pinterest Board) and at the end of the story the Bondi Lifeguards saying something like ‘You are a lifesaver Capitain Sunscreen’?

Other elements could include him playing Australian Rules Football with his friends/family, the dog Ruby to be a Maremma (see pinterest board/google), other landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge; Sydney Opera House in the background of a scene with his Mum and Dad?

Colors to be vibrant and engage kids aged 3-8 years.

Hi - Forgive the question, but I'm a little concerned about cross-messaging in the narrative here. In a nutshell, your kid character gets sun burned and (as a consequence) develops super-powers. I'm almost positively certain that isn't the message you want to get across and indeed - narratively - the super-powers come from using sun-screen.

Irrespective - the kid gets sunburned and acquires super-powers as a consequence.

Kids this age group (most especially boys) don't do a bundle on narrative subtlety. Your broad stroke message - that of getting sun-burn - reads as no bad thing at all. Kind of like Bruce Banner getting exposed to Gamma Radiation....
