Contest Brief

I am starting a YouTube channel and need a logo for it, along with social media icons for youtube, instagram, twitter. etc. Once the logo is finalised I will also need help producing a simple animated title card to play at the beginning of each episode. Please read this brief in full before beginning work so you understand precisely what my requirements are.

The YouTube channel will be called "Top Spin Times". I will be using it to showcase and review precision spinning tops. To begin with I am just looking to lock down the the logo design. Please do not waste your time creating any animation until the logo has been finalized. Once we have the logo done, we can work together to create the animation.

The first thing you need to know is that precision spinning tops are not really for children, so the logo should be more adult in feel. Yes they are toys, but they are also a melding of precision engineering, creativity and art. In this modern world of ephemera, these are EDC (Every Day Carry) heirloom objects that are designed to be enjoyed and handed down to the next generation. They are typically, though not always, made of metals like steel, brass, bronze and copper, as well as exotic materials like titanium, tungsten, damascus steel and more. They are also made of hard woods or a combination of metal and wood. To familiarise yourself with the products I will be covering, I encourage you to research these companies:

I have photographed a broad selection of tops for inspiration. Hopefully it will help you understand the kinds of things the channel will cover: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/c8fc8b8m9p812mj/AABjkMi95W_VHThtriyfnVMIa?dl=0

Some ideas I've been thinking about. One idea is that the words could be made to resemble a spinning top. themsleves.
TOP (3 letters)
SPIN (4 letters)
TIMES (5 letters)

Another idea is that the letters T and P can be made to look like spinning tops as they are symmetrical (or the P could be made to look symmetrical.)

IMPORTANT: If you decide to use a spinning top as the logo, It should be one that is be spun with the fingers, not with string (a.k.a. a Trompo top). The vast majority of tops I will cover will be finger spinners.

The tops I am covering are sometimes designed firstly as a piece of art and secondly as a spinning top, while others are designed purely for spinning top performance, where what they look like comes second. Whatever tops are used in the design (if any) should represent these two opposing designs. The channel will cover spinning tops and spin bases for now. In the future I may cover fidget spinners but currently have no plans to do so.

For the animated title sequence, I’m thinking it should be 6-10 seconds and play near the beginning of each episode. I have already filmed a whole variety of different spinning tops and these could be used as the background for the video with the logo animating in front. I don't have a full picture of how this will look, but I look forward to working on it together and incorpoating your ideas.

A note about mtion lines under the top. I don't want it to look that the top is out of control and shooting to the left or right. See my video clip here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tvfdwkn845307f8/IMG_0792.mov?dl=0

Notice how the top hulas gentle around its central axis. It si not out of control, but is rotating around its centre of gravity. If you draw an oval under the top to denote it's path use this as a guide. Make sure the oval is under where the centre of the top will be .

More general feedback - If use a single top, as an icon, I would prefer that it be one spun with the fingers, not with string (a.k.a. a Trompo top). The vast majority of tops I will cover will be finger spinners.

Ok drew (badly!) this idea: https://www.dropbox.com/s/s2fczbmxqkfmg23/IMG_0790.jpeg?dl=0

    - I like the idea that that the top for the logo (if that is the direction we end up going in), should have the stem as the T, the body as the S, and the bottom as the other T.
    - The top should be riding on a ballbearing. This could be glinting since a ruby or sapphire is often used.
    - Having the top tilted slightly helps to convey that it is spinning. Try putting some lines to indicate the path of the point which help convey speed. The first path I dry in pen is wrong. Better to use the pencil path below it. The top should be rotating around its centre of gravity.

I should also add that this design is a bit top heavy (pun!) I would prefer the fat part of the top to b lower down.

I also like the idea of what I wrote below of the text having letters replaced with tops:

    TOP
    SPIN
    TIMES

The letters T, P and M could be made to resemble a spinning top. Each letter should be different type of top.

    Some general feedback:

    - Precision spinning tops nearly all share a common feature of using a ballbearing as a contact point. Sometimes this is most of steel, but can also be made of ruby and sapphire. It would be good to show this rather than having just a point .a point. Example here: https://darksucks.com/collections/lamda-spin-tops/products/lambda-top-solid-brass

    - It would also be good to get a sense of spinning from the logo. Maybe have the tops leaning off center, or have some motion blur/lines to convey the speed that they are spinning
