Book Cover

Contest Brief

A book cover for the most important book ever written on leadership.

An ongoing effort is the exploration and study of leadership failure. As observed throughout the world, leadership is being degraded, experiencing harm, failing and fails with increasing risks. The same has contributed to the loss of blood, treasure and the right living of people globally (e.g., war related deaths and expenditures, scandals that damage organizations, and too many other harms to people). Billions of dollars being spent on management and leadership interventions in America, of the tens of billions spent globally; leadership failures are many. Leadership confidence is low, as spending and development increases. We just completed an exploratory sequential-mixed methods study; after nearly 3 years, the work yielded leadership’s “grand theory”. When we use the technical term grand theory, it is in light of theories such as Newton’s law and Einstein’s theory of general relativity (GR). The field has theories on approaches to leadership and have co-opted social learning theories to help explain the phenomena. The Kellogg Leadership Studies Project (KLSP), a 4-year initiative with 25 scholars in the early stages sought a general theory that would encompass all of leadership. The group admittedly did not attain that goal. The study contained in this writing did find the long sought after grand theory for leadership; how it work and does not work. Any human intervention premised on the theory that emerged from the study, helps to ensure its success, human progress, and potentially innovation.
