Well, first things first, don't accept the project until and unless you're sure you can do it. I always do that. After a project has been offered to me, I first write a sample for the client, and if they give me the go-ahead, I accept the project and begin work.
As to cancelled projects and unresponsive clients - in the first case, you can speak to Support about it, and they might refund the project fee to you. For unresponsive clients, you'll have to dispute payment. If they don't respond within the next 7 days, you will automatically win the dispute, and get the money.

Same issue here, i think freelancer.com should protect more his users and require that an employer create that first milestone with the project fee

Before accepting the project, ask the employer (nicely) to create a milestone that covers the fees.

$5 for projects $50 and below, and 10% for projects above $50. (still depends on your subscription, some have different fees)

You can not get your money back ... freelancer fees is taken to contact you together and it is not refundable ... so you should ask the employer in a gentle way to create a milestone that covers this fees before starting the project as mentioned in PandaLion98 comment. Freelancer fees is 10% of any project and minimum charge $5. In this case if the employer refused to release the milestone or didn't respond you can create a dispute and get the created milestone. The best solution in my opinion is to ask the employer to create a full milestone on steps or once before you finish the project and may be release it on delivery or as you agree.
Good Luck

Try to ask the support center via chat to get fast response. I also have the same problem as you, and I've asked the support center twice. The last person said that I need to wait 7 days after the project done (that has been set by client) then I can cancel the project.
So I have to wait for 36 days now. I'll tell you later whether it works or not after 36 days.

I actually placed a bid for a job, and I was awarded, and I accepted it, and suddenly the employer disappeared, and $5 already gone. I just feel so bad
