Are "test articles" normal?

asked by ingridvelasquez 7 months ago

Hi, fellow freelancers.

I was just asked to submit a 1,000 word on a specific subject (with a 5-hour deadline). Is this normal? I thought asking for samples was the standard practice. Hate to say it, but I'm kind of worried that I might be getting ripped off. I want to give the benefit of the doubt, of course. It's just that I'm new here and have no idea yet of what's normal and what isn't.

Thanks for your time!

Your doubts are totally normal, I would be irritated, too. As a translator, I am often asked to provide a short sample translation, which I gladly do, when I feel that the employer is trustful and serious. But creating content of nearly 4 standard pages (1000 words) seems to be quite a lot. I would recommend you to upload some unique text, which you have created yourself, to your profile portfolio in order to show future employer, what you are able to write and to convince them of your writing skills. Kind regards!
