Where does the Death of Self-Cert leave Contractors?
  05-11-2009
The Bank of England have again held the base rate at 0.50%, as they strive to steer the UK economy out of recession with the help of the Treasury and the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Last month the FSA took an initial step towards this by announcing new proposals that included a ban on Self-Cert Mortgages. Self-certification mortgages, also dubbed liar loans, accounted for one third of new loans in 2007, or about GBP100 billion of the GBP300 billion loans granted that year. The FSA argue that mortgages that don’t require any proof of income have been abused during the property b....

Freelance programmers as your modern day entrepreneurs
  04-11-2009
Businesses today would rather resort to outsourcing than employing an individual full-time. This trend will continue to take place as long as there are start-up companies and as long as the economy still proves to be unstable. Outsourcing is a win-win situation for both companies and freelancers as it economizes time and revenue. One of the highly preferred jobs in the outsourcing industry is the freelancer programmer. Freelance programmers are commonly found among college graduates who wish to improve on their programming skills. This is good for novices who eventually want to break into ....

Personal Growth in Freelancing
  03-11-2009
It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. In the case of freelancing, yes, this saying applies. Your contacts are your most valuable assets aside from your skill. You will need people to give you business, whether it is a neighbor, your parents, classmates, etc. Questions when considering freelance work via referrals: 1. Do you know anyone inside a company where you can get the latest scoop on what’s the current industry trend? 2. Do you know 20 people who can recommend you? 3. Do you know 10 people who are interested in freelance services? 4. Are you willing to invest on more than....

So you’ve decided to become a freelancer? Congratulations! Freelancing is one of the most rewarding career moves anyone will ever make. The Advantages of the Freelancing Business
  01-11-2009
Now that you have decided to take the freelancing plunge, what’s next? The first thing to do when entering the freelance business is to get acquainted with the basics. Be realistic in your expectations and do your research. For the budding freelancer, what should you ask yourself first? 1. Do you have the tenacity and patience to study and learn the details of legal entities such as corporations and sole-proprietorship? 2. Can you balance, maintain and keep your books? 3. Can you keep good records just in case business-related tax deductions resurface? Though, getting into the details....

Social Networks And Their Place in Business
  30-10-2009
I frequent the LinkedIn.com's Q&A section on a regular basis and last week, I found an intriguing question: 'Are social networks key to improving customer relations and product development?' This prompts an interesting discussion into whether companies should use social tools to promote their business online, and if so, how exactly they should do it. In short, I believe that yes, companies should be making use of these tools. Nearly everybody has Internet access now, and the social platforms that exist are sophisticated enough to segment user groups for targeted advertisin....

  28-10-2009
14th September 2009 In a bid to make the somewhat tedious subject of business insurance slightly more exciting, online based Kingsbridge Professional Solutions (KPSol) have embarked on an unusual journey. When thinking of personal insurance providers, the first companies that spring to mind are Churchill, Direct line, and Compare the Market, purely because of the dog, the phone and the meerkat. When you think of business insurance, Kingsbridge want you to remember the armadillo. Arnie Armadillo has been created to brighten up the KPSol website, and to lead a marketing campaign through a ....

Are you really self-employed?
  11-08-2009
Danbro, the award-winning specialist accountancy firm for contract and freelance workers, is warning contractors to ensure they do genuinely fit the criteria of being self-employed ahead of a likely government crackdown. The government is currently consulting on new legislation to tackle ‘false self-employment’, following measures announced in this year’s Budget by Chancellor Alistair Darling. Mr Darling claimed that, as well as costing money to the exchequer, false self-employment also affected the ability of compliant businesses to be competitive and stopped workers accessing social securit....
