10 things that changed my life
  22-08-2010
#1 - Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address For teaching me to stop attributing value to unimportant things, and start trusting my instincts. Before reading Jobs’ speech, I was working a job I hated because it was really the only thing I ever tried. It was what I knew. Jobs says “You’ve got to find what you love.” His article helped me realize that I was wasting my life living someone else’s dream. If I settled for someone else’s dream, I’d grow old and die without ever seeking my own. #2 - Violent Acres’ Most People Are Depressed For a Very Good Reason For teaching me that be....

Insurances that all businesses should have
  25-03-2010
No business is immune to unpredictable risks. The appropriate business insurance deal can provide peace of mind and ensure your company will survive even the most severe setback, be it a fire, theft, injury or accident. Some insurance providers offer comprehensive and flexible packaged deals that will not only cut down on paperwork and cover against the most common business threats but may also be cheaper than a series of specific deals. Whether as part of a wholesale package, or bought individually, the following insurances will be vital for most firms: - All employers are obliged to....

  23-03-2010
It is a long piece to read but believe you me it's worth reading:) Carve your Destiny is a mega project by Anubhav Srivastava, a 23 year old guy from New Delhi, India, currently pursuing Master’s in Media and Communications from the University of Leicester, UK. This documentary film is an ambitious venture that seeks to investigate the mentality of the super successful through in depth interviews with achievers themselves. Most Recently Anubhav had the honor of interacting with Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, the father of DNA fingerprinting and profiling. His discoveries in DNA have....

Are Lending Conditions Relaxing for Contractors?
  21-12-2009
No surprises from the Bank of England this lunchtime, as once again the base rate was kept at 0.50%. This follows closely on the heels of the pre-budget report where it was announced that the temporary stamp duty holiday, which increased the threshold from £125,000 to £175,000, would finish as planned at the end of the year. Activity in the housing market has increased markedly since reaching a trough in January when just 23,000 home loans were advanced during the month. A total of 55,300 mortgages were granted by lenders in October, the highest number since December 2007, the Council....

Translators and translators' clients (unhelpful translation project ads)
  11-12-2009
Summing up the topic of this blog: properly selling yourself as a (highly professional and reliable) freelance translator will not help if translation clients' adverts are not helpful! So you have finished your higher-education language studies and are looking forward to making a living as a freelance translator. While not without apprehension, your excitement and enthusiasm are as evident as they are genuine - and however boast-worthy your academic qualifications and other experience, you just want to market yourself effectively to clients indeterminate... but you have to agree that so....

Are you ready for Freelancing?
  17-11-2009
Some websites describe freelancing as a continuous learning process, both for beginners and veteran freelancers. Many potential freelancers are in a job and undecided about taking the plunge. Decide about your reasons to freelance. Do you want to do a specific kind of work, or be part of a certain kind of company or person? Do you just want to avoid commuting? Or do you want to earn more than what you have now, in less time? You can have myriads of reasons. You must be clear with what you want to happen now and in the future, even if you just want to know if you’re still motivated to go on wi....

Freelance writing
  17-11-2009
Freelancing, particularly, freelance writing, affords you the luxury of setting your own schedule. You can set one day in a week as a special and extraordinary day. You can work from 6 to 10 hours a day, depending on your deadlines. Some freelance writers spend some time in the bookstore in order to visualize the book that they want to publish in the future. It would be inspiring to walk into a stack of books or a spic and span wooden rack of magazines, where you can touch a page or two of the book or magazine that catches your attention. It would be good to visit the bookstore and obser....

  11-11-2009
Writing can meet a lot of needs, objectives and requirements. From being simply a basic skill one learns in school to pass requirements (and eventually to use in formal communication), writing has also since become a tool to earn money, communicate one’s opinions, market one’s products and provide information on a product. The development of the Internet gave more opportunities for writers-both students and professionals alike to practice their craft in various fields. They can post blog entries, and publish online articles on all kinds of subjects. Freelance writing offers opportunities to....

How to become a freelance web and graphics designer
  10-11-2009
Nowadays, there are a lot of opportunities in web and graphics design. Unlike before when graphic design is limited to creating advertisements published in papers and magazines, clients can now post their “ads” online. In addition, firms and individuals now create their own sites online to reach out to a greater number of clients. To be able to do so, they have to create websites which are both aesthetically attractive and user friendly. Graphic and web designers can enter the scene to provide these needs. In this aspect, computer design enthusiasts and animation students have another area....

Graphic designers: Starting from the ground, up
  09-11-2009
Graphic designers are artists in the most technical sense. They are the pilots that steward brands and products to better sell themselves, sometimes creating not only an image but also a timeless name that can be recognized for generations to come. Graphic designers have stemmed the way from your typical painters to the more advanced website designers. How does one get to be a graphic designer? Does an eye for beauty the only thing that matters in graphic design? Why is it in high demand? Who are interested in hiring such skills? Today, graphic designers are usually found in a typical c....

Freelance interpreters have competitive professional edge
  08-11-2009
Not so many people are given the gift of language. At school, it may take some time before a student actually learns a new language on his own, more so if the language he is studying is totally different than that of his mother tongue. However, for some, learning a new language is as easy as pie. This is a gift and a competitive edge against their counterparts. In the business sector, fluency in a particular language like French, Nihonggo or Japanese is important in everyday business communications. Knowing a certain language gives the person a glimpse of the culture of that particular peo....

What it takes to be a professional freelance writer
  05-11-2009
When you wish to become a professional freelance writer, make sure you talk the talk and walk the walk. Nothing just turns off the writing industry other than an unethical author. Sometimes the term ‘professionalism’ tends to be tossed around a lot, it eventually loses its meaning. There are so many freelance writers available but general population reeks of substandard, amateur work and conduct unbecoming of a true professional. What does it take to be a professional freelance writer? Does graduating from a good school matter? In writing, though skill is a necessity --- creativity and g....
